Concourt stands up against impunity

OUTA welcomes the Constitutional Court judgment sending Jacob Zuma to jail for 15 months with no possibility of overturning this.

The Concourt has shown it will defend the courts and the rule of law, and act against impunity. 

“No person is above the law,” the Concourt said in the judgment, finding Zuma guilty of contempt of court.

“The Concourt judgment is a watershed, showing that the very highest in the land not only will be held to account, but that those in high public office are expected to uphold the Constitution,” says Wayne Duvenage, OUTA CEO.

“This judgment is a clear message underlining the independence of the courts, which must act without fear or favour. It sends a strong message to the country and the world that accountability is being meted out and the rule of law is being applied. Jacob Zuma has no-one to blame but himself. He displayed contempt for the State Capture Commission and the Concourt, making a mockery of his publicly made oath as incoming president – twice – to uphold the Constitution,” says Duvenage.

OUTA looks forward to prosecutions of those who participated in and promoted state capture.
