Drivers Licence Petition

Drivers Licence Petition

OUTA has written to the Minister of Transport, asking him to consider changing the driver’s licence renewal period from 5 to 10 years.

If you agree that the drivers licence renewal should be extended from 5 to 10 years, please support this campaign by signing our petition.

We believe that extending the renewal period from 5 to 10 years will save the South Africans and Government time and money.

This is OUTA’s position:

1. The driver’s licence renewal period be applied from 5 to 10 years for ages of 18 to 65 years.

2. The online renewal process be made more efficient.

3. Various methods for renewal be made available through test centres and reputable service providers.

4. That more extensive research and the inclusion of input from bussing and tourism role-players be done when determining the restrictions for Professional Driver’s Permits.

The State is facing a growing crisis of legitimacy in its inability to address the backlog of driver’s licence renewals, which appears to be getting worse, not better. This in turn is spilling out into a crisis of administrative challenges that has the potential for citizens to be deemed as acting ‘outside of the law’, when driving without a licence, due to the state’s inefficiencies. By extending the renewal period to ten years, this problem is solved for both government and motorists.

OUTA will submit the completed petition, to the Department of Transport, as well as Parliament, in a bid to lobby government to change the regulations.

Please sign this petition and share it as far and wide as possible. The more people supporting this campaign, the stronger we believe our position will be.

Closing date for this petition is 15 November 2020.
