OUTA’S MATT JOHNSTON TESTIFIED AT THE ZONDO COMMISSION

OUTA’s hard work to expose the failure of parliamentary oversight – one of the primary causes of State Capture – has been noticed. The Zondo Commission’s invitation to share our insight into this was a proud moment for the whole OUTA team, and will hopefully help bring about much needed change in Parliamentary oversight and accountability in future.

Over the past few years, OUTA has consistently applied pressure on Parliament to do its oversight job properly. Late last year, OUTA’s Parliamentary Engagement Officer, Matt Johnston, compiled a report on how members of parliament failed to hold the Executive to account, either due to incapacity or a lack of accountability and political will. This was OUTA’s second report on how Parliament failed South Africans – the first was our report on former president Zuma’s role in State Capture in 2017.
