The Deputy Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke remains the top pick as the new Auditor-General from 1 December as the parliamentary committee tasked to appoint the new AG unanimously recommended her to Parliament.

Maluleke is now set to take over from the outgoing AG Kimi Makwetu, whose seven-year term ends on 30 November.

OUTA welcomes the committee’s recommendation as Maluleke was also OUTA’s top pick in its recommendation to the committee in August. “We  developed an eligibility matrix to determine the best candidates for the position which indicated the three most eligible candidates. Amongst the criteria were qualifications, auditing experience, leadership, finance and risk management. Through our research, Tsakani Maluleke appeared to be the best candidate,” says Dominique Msibi, Portfolio Manager at OUTA’s Public Governance Division.

Maluleke has a good track record as she has the experience of being the Deputy AG since 2014.

“We need an AG who holds transgressors to account without fear or favour, someone who will exercise the new powers of the AG and take Kimi Makwetu’s work to a whole new level. We look forward to seeing this. Civil society counts on the next AG to keep the best interest of our nation at heart,” says Msibi.

The ad-hoc committee has formally adopted its report with Maluleke as the unanimous recommendation. This report is due to be discussed in the National Assembly on 27 October. Once agreed upon, the nomination will go to President Cyril Ramaphosa to make the official appointment.
