Dear Madam Speaker, please make it stop!

South Africa needs Parliament to get that investigation into the Public Protector’s fitness to hold office underway as a matter of urgency.

Dear Madam Speaker, please make it stop!

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane lost yet another court battle on Friday and is now blaming the Speaker of Parliament, Thandi Modise, for her woes.

Is she using the same legal warfare tactics we came to know in the Zuma era? It seems that she will go to great lengths to keep her job. Although one has to admire her for her ongoing fight, could she please do this with her own money and not taxpayers’ money?

The Public Protector, which is one of the state institutions supporting constitutional democracy, is spending taxpayers’ money like there is no tomorrow. How many times will the Public Protector suffer embarrassing losses before she quits?

Advocate Mkhwebane has done enormous damage to an office that is supposed to assist South Africans.

We call on Speaker Modise to expedite the process to investigate her competence to hold that office.

In June 2019, OUTA petitioned Parliament to hold an inquiry into Advocate Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office. Since then, there have been more court rulings against her.  In September 2019, OUTA added a supplementary submission with further information which arose after the initial submission. Read more on this action here.

In February 2020, OUTA filed an application in the Pretoria High Court, calling for access to documents used by the Public Protector in her report which exonerated David Mabuza of procurement irregularities while he was premier of Mpumalanga. Read more on this here.
